Chapter 52 - Hunter

Hunter thought it was a dream. He had a beautiful night, he punched a man in the face, he had a chocolate fight, they watched a movie on the couch, and he kissed her. She fell asleep on him and then fell asleep in his arms. It was natural. It was simple. He loved her. He was absolutely head over heels positively in love with her. When he woke up, the smell of her perfume still hung in the air. He swallowed and licked his lips as his eyes blinked open. "Good mo-" She wasn't there. Maybe it was a dream. He sighed and stood up from his spot on the ground. He stretched and walked out of the room. "Ellie? Are you here?" He shouted. The apartment was quiet. He thought the worst and pushed into the bathroom. Empty. He exhaled in relief and walked into the kitchen. He made some toast and ate it at the table before walking into the living room.

He sat down on the couch and snagged the note off the phone. He smiled gently at her handwriting and the heart next to her name. He set it back down and noticed the message light blinking. He gasped at his realization. He still needed to call the lawyer about his parents. He pressed the button "This  message is for Hunter Reed. My name is Elliot Benson and I'm a lawyer. I need you to call me as soon as you can. It's about your parents. Thank you." He was nervous, even though this was a good thing. He was happy as Hunter.  He didn't know Hunter Reed. He hesitantly picked up the phone and took a deep breath before returning the call. It rang twice before being answered.

"Hello, this is the law office of Elliot Benson. My name is Erica, how may I help you?" Hunter's mind blanked. "Hello?"

"Hello. I'm Hunter. I'm returning a call." He said quickly into the phone. "Hunter uh...Hunter Reed."

"Oh, hello, Mr. Reed. I'll put you through." She said happily. Hunter took a deep breath and started pacing. After a few minutes of waiting, a voice came on the line.

"Mr. Reed?" The voice was deep and scratchy. Hunter cleared his throat.

"Umm...yes. That's me." Hunter said quietly.

"Mr. Reed, during your recent visit to the hospital, they took a sample of your blood." He said plainly. "As protocol for John Doe's, or in your case Hunter Doe's, they sent it in for sampling. The authorities finally found a match to two bodies found in the woods around 20 years ago. A...Mel Douglas and his niece Elizabeth Reed. The bodies showed that she had recently given birth when they found her. We believe that you are that child. However it is that you were able to survive being born in the woods is beyond me, but maybe you can tell me. I'd like you to stop by later today and we'll have a chat about your bequests." He said calmly. "How does 10:30 sound?"

"Uh...Yeah. I'll be there." Hunter said goodbye and hung up after getting the address. "Well, I was found of an ancient goddess and was sent a camp for demigods where I was raised and taught to be a warrior by a half-horse half-man named Chiron." He said to himself. He looked at the note that Arabella had left for him and sighed. "Why aren't you here? You'd know what to do..." He sat there for a few moments, before grabbing the phone. He dialed her number. Ring....Ring....Ring....Ring....Ring....Click

"This is the phone of Arabella Foster. Please, leave your name and number and I'll call you back. Bye!" Her voice said happily. Hunter hung up and leaned his head back onto the couch. He wished she were here. Even if she didn't know what to do, Hunter would feel better. He stood up and took a shower and slipped on some clean clothes. Hunter grabbed the note from Arabella and slipped it into his pocket before leaving.

He finally arrived at the building and stood out front. He walked to a payphone and tried calling Arabella again. He got her voicemail and hung up. He finally walked inside. He walked to Erica's desk and cleared his throat.

"Welcome to the law office of Elliot Benson. How can I help you?" She said with a smile up at him. He managed a smile.

"I'm Hunter uh...Reed. I have an appointment at 10:30." Hunter said. She stood up from her desk.

"Just go right in. He should be waiting for you." She walked over and opened the door for him and Hunter walked in.

"Mr. Reed, I presume?" He said with a smile. The man had gray-white hair and dark eyes hidden behind a large pair of glasses. He was a small man with a large belly. "Please. Sit. Would you like a cup of coffee? Tea, maybe?"

"Umm..No, thank you." Hunter said as he sat down. "How can I help you?"

"Well, we'll get to all of the legal mumbo-jumbo eventually. Right now, I want to hear about how you managed to live for 20 years without anybody taking care of you. Were you like...raised by wolves or something?" He said with a chuckle. Hunter's eyes widened at the slight accuracy of the statement.

"No, no, no." He said with a nervous chuckle. "I uh...I was found by some homeless people. They took care of me." He said quietly. The lawyer looked at him with a raised eyebrow.

"Well, anyway. What are your plans for the next week or so?" He asked, sorting some paperwork. Hunter thought about it. He was planning to cook for Arabella and maybe see if he could find a job, but other than that all he wanted to do was spend time with her.

"Not much. I'll be busy around five, most nights, but other than that I should be free." Hunter said with a shrug. Mr. Benson smiled and nodded.

"Let's get started then." He said sliding a form over to Hunter and handing him a pen. "Fill these out to the best of your ability and we'll go from there." Hunter sighed and started to work.

After a few hours of filling out paperwork with a break for lunch, Hunter stumbled into the apartment and fell onto the couch. "I should make dinner." He said to himself. He finally walked into the kitchen and checked the fridge. "Nothing. Never mind, then." He walked back to the couch fell onto his stomach. He let out a quiet groan and closed his eyes.
